Faldorts

“Land forbears”, says Faldorts’ favorite proverb which perfectly well represents the nature of this nation. At first glance these erlanies may seem too slow, thorough and “grounded”, however huge inner power is concealed deep inside them. This power enables them to survive in the most difficult circumstances and to maintain what is called “heart of the soul”.
This character of Faldorts has been shaped both by living conditions in their lands, and by Faldorts’ creator – a Celestial called Raukar. He is thorough and unhurried too; so while creating Faldorts, Raukar wanted them to be enduring and sturdy.
Indeed, these erlanies can settle in any location: unlike Giltaries and Saihens they do not really care much where to live. They develop open areas just as successfully as they assimilate highlands and territories adjacent to Giltarien forests. They succeed due to endurance and ability to adapt to any conditions. To put it more precisely – in some cases they get adapted, in others they adapt the environment: they plow fields, lay out vegetable gardens, and build huge fortress-like houses where they can outlast any hostile raid and any bad weather. These erlanies are like trees: they may be frayed torn and drained by conditions, but they will not be broken.
In communication Faldorts are just as unhurried and thorough. They never draw conclusions about another person right away, but after they finally do, it will be hard to make them change their mind. Their speech is slow, and sentences are short. Faldorts may seem simple-minded and not very bright, but this is not true: this way of conversation allows them to evaluate another person and to decide whether it is worth dealing with him or her.
Faldorts will make a decision after they have weighted it thoroughly. Probably, this is the reason why their undertakings (be it development of new deposits, house construction or military campaign) generally succeed.
These erlanies are unexcelled in mining: the majority of the minerals extracted in Ragnesis are recovered by Faldorts. They are also the most talented blacksmiths, and their forged pieces are highly appreciated far outside Skullurg. Faldorts ardently keep secrets of their craft. It is very rare that local blacksmiths would accept someone of other nation as an apprentice; besides, journeymen will anyway be admitted to just a minor portion of the craft secrets. Only after long years of apprenticeship, when a master decides that an apprentice is trustworthy, the apprentice will get an access to the secrets of ancient craftsmen.
The same concerns Faldortian skills in military affairs: all the secrets are strictly safeguarded from strangers. Only verified and reliable persons are admitted to war machines. While blacksmiths do sell their products to foreigners, masters of poliorketikon (a science of siege) do not sell their siege machines to other countries. For over the entire history of Ragnesis very few incidents (a dozen at most) are known that during hostilities an enemy managed to capture siege machines of Faldorts: should such threat appear, masters destroy their machines personally.
In general, achievements of Faldorts in military art are significant: back long time ago it was them who formed mounted troops and armor-clad infantry. While Bushtargs prefer light horse troops and blitzkrieg raids, and Giltaries prefer guerilla warfare, Faldorts meet their enemies face to face and offer a battle that cannot be dropped out without bearing significant losses. That is why in previous eras (back when Ragnesis has not yet been split, and large-scale battles used to occur) other parties’ commanders tried to restrain their troops from “direct contact” with Faldorts army as long as possible.
Wizardry of Faldorts is commonly aimed at using vital energy to heal the flesh, to resist to direct injury and poison, and eventually – just to increase bodily physical resources. Faldortian wizardry can also raise competitive spirit, help resisting fear and panic; it can also delude enemies by affecting their mind. While working with nature, the wizards can subdue wind, create whirlwinds and walls out of air currents, use the element of cold, powers of the Earth (in this case the most mighty wizards can cause earthquakes or stone falls), and powers of the Sun. Besides, their wizardry deprives their enemies of magical advantage and prevents them from escaping into the spectral world.
Faldorts’ achievements in the sphere of magic are supplemented with their deepest knowledge of mechanics. We have already mentioned war machines of Faldorts, but this knowledge is equally applied in peaceful life too. Certainly, wizardry and machinery are quite kindred in some ways, but at the same time they considerably differ: once they are made, mechanisms whose action is based on laws of inanimate nature are more independent of their creator – they can be used by any erlany even if he or she is absolutely ignorant in mechanics.
Still, mechanics is just one of the sciences that Faldorts excel in. But this nation has become as famous for their achievements in the art of healing.
As a matter of fact, Faldorts indeed are known as the most meticulous and observant scholars in Ragnesis. Hundreds of visitors from all over the world attend the Skullurg academy every year; the academy hosts one of the richest libraries in Ragnesis. Still, some departments of the Skullurg academy are “for Faldorts only”.
In the effort to study and understand the world Faldorts often leave their homeland and set out on journeys which can take months and even years. Some of them may settle in foreign lands, but most come back sooner or later, having enriched themselves both materially and intellectually.
These erlanies respect other nations’ customs, but they always strictly keep their own traditions. Religions of other Celestials and some cults are permitted in Skullurg, but Rahukar enjoys absolute priority. Faldorts certainly offer Him prayers while traveling.
And, now as before, Rahukar seems to care after His people, and to save His creatures even in the hardest times... or maybe it is just that they are so good? – who knows...
