The Colours To Wear To Prom In 2020

by Chloe Wilshere, Content Creator

2020 Prom Season is fast approaching. If it’s you attending a Prom this year, then you’ll know it’s never too early to start thinking about your dream dress. And you’ve got no reason not to. Your school Prom is a super-special night that marks the end of an era, a night you’ve been waiting for throughout your school years- so you want your dress to be perfect.

Thankfully, gone are the days where buying a prom dress required an arm and leg to be spent on them, and there’s beautiful, elegant options across the high-street to choose from including our very own occasion collection.

But, if you’re unsure of where to start on the hunt for your perfect prom dress, then we’re here to help. One of the main factors in picking out your perfect prom dress is deciding what colour you want to wear. And this year it’s all about candy colours.

The prediction of what colour to wear to prom all comes from awards shows, street style and red carpet events, and sorbet shades have been unstoppable over the past year. So from pastel pink, to baby blue and sage green, we’ve rounded up the sorbet shades you need to consider when picking out your prom dress this occasion season.

1. Pastel Pink

If there’s one candy-based shade that we can’t get away from this occasion season, it’s definitely baby pink.

Different hues of pink have been worn up and down runways and red carpet events. Foroccasion season, we are particularly loving baby pink, and, clearly, we’re not the only ones. With Jourdan Dunn, Hailey Bieber and Taylor Hill all looking pretty in pink at red carpet events, it’s time to unleash your sweet tooth and wear a slice of baby pink this occasion season.

Pastel pink complements all skin tones and looks great with both gold and silver jewellery. And, lucky for you, we have plenty of pretty pink occasion outfits to choose from.

2. Baby Blue

If there’s one occasion that you can go bold with colour then it’s on your prom night. And if there’s one colour that’s certain to make a statement it’s baby blue. With blue announced as Pantone’s colour of the year, it’s little wonder that it’s already proving to be a firm favourite in the fashion world.

Everyone from Boss to Balmain has showcased shades of blue in one way or another in their shows, and it’s proven a hit with showgoers too.

From Erica Pelosini’s baby blue tulle dress, to JLo’s deep V-neck blue maxi and Rihanna’s satin baby blue number at the Fashion Awards red carpet, it’s clear to see why baby blue is making for the perfect occasion dress colour.

3. Lilac

Purple is one of those colours that often divides the fashion world by 50/50. There are those who love it and those who hate it. But this season, lilac is back. The pastel-sweetshade has dominated the red carpets and we’ve been obsessed with all things lilac ever since Ariana Grande wore her lilac bubble hem mini dress with matching knee-high boots.

Elle Fanning also shows us just how sweet lilac can look with pink details and a white heel- it’s a colour that’s got us feeling very sweet. Our new favourite super hero Brie Larson also took to the purple carpet in a satin lilac dress last year to promote Avengers: Endgame, and it looks so elegant and fresh it’s the only reassurance you need that it’s the perfect colour for prom night.

4. Sage Green

Probably the newest candy colour on the block, sage green should definitely be a contender of colour for your prom dress.

It’s a colour that has been dominating the fashion scene over the past few months, and whether you call it sage, pistachio, or mint, none of the answers are wrong... Sage is a colour that varies in shade from being a super-light pastel green to being slightly darker and closer to the khaki side. But, for Prom season we think it’s all about pastel colours.

We’re also not the only ones feeling for green this occasion season, with green aesthetics trending, global fashion search platform Lyst announced last year there had been a 22% rise in searches for specific pale green shades including pistachio and sage.

So, when looking for your perfect prom dress this year, take inspiration from ChrissyTeigen, Lucy Hale and Suki Waterhouse in their sage green red carpet dresses. It’s a colour that’s sure to turn heads.
