How To Throw a Virtual Celebration This Bank Holiday

by Chloe Wilshere, Content Creator

This Friday 8th May marks exactly 75 years since the end of World War 2, otherwise known as Victory in Europe Day. Whilst the nationwide major celebrations have been scaled back this Bank Holiday, VE Day is still the perfect excuse to throw a fun virtual celebration with friends and family.

You might ask whether it’s possible to throw a fun and successful party via video chat, but the answer is in fact yes. So we’ve created a list of a few simple tips and guidelines to make sure you throw the perfect virtual party and make it one to remember.

1. Choose Your Platform

Currently the amount of platforms out there for group video calls is endless, and typically you’ll find that everyone has one they prefer. So plan ahead by deciding which platform you’re going to use. Whether it’s Zoom, Skype or Google Hangout, we promise it will make your life much easier if everyone knows in advance which platform they’re going to be using. If you’re going to be inviting people that are slightly less advanced with technology (we know technology can be a challenge, shall we say, with parents and grandparents) it may be best to provide them with a few tips on how to use it and instructions to avoid any technical blips when the party gets started.

2. Set a Date and Time and Send Out Virtual Invites

All our plans may have been cancelled but still we find our friends and family ‘busy’ or ‘double booked'. So ensure you plan ahead and set a date and time in advance. Then send out your virtual invitations, whether it’s a simple text message or email or you want to go all out and create a fancy one from free sites such as Evite or Smilebox. Your guests then have no excuse but to join your virtual party!

3. Set Tasks & Themes

To ensure a good time is had by all, giving your guests a theme to dress for and tasks to complete is vital. Whether it’s dressing as celebrities, superheroes or other friends and family, the simple task of setting a theme is sure to get everyone excited about your virtual party and keen to see what everyone else comes dressed as.

Setting tasks is also a key icebreaker and keeps your virtual party flowing. Whether it’s that you want to have everyone drinking certain drinks and send them a recipe to prepare special cocktails, request everyone to bake something for the party or request each person to prepare a game to play throughout your party, the possibilities are endless.

4. Decorate Appropriately

Decorating appropriately for your virtual celebration is essential for getting in the party spirit. Whether your decorating consists of setting an appropriate virtual background on Zoom or going all-out and buying decorations, decorating is essential for a good virtual party. Make sure your guests get the memo too and plan a prize for the guest with the best decorations.

5. Plan Your Outfit

Now we haven’t had an excuse to get dressed up and buy a new party outfit for a while now. So what better excuse than to buy yourself something new for your virtual party? Whether you want new season florals, pastels or a nice new top to go with your jean or joggers (a nice top and joggers, a new trend that’s emerged in lockdown), we’ve got you covered. It’s time to plan your outfit, get dressed up and let your hair down for your iconic virtual party.

6. Plan In Some Games

The last top tip for throwing the perfect virtual party is to keep your guests engaged and having fun by planning in some games. Whether all your guests have prepared a game or you’ve created them yourself, the possibilities are endless for virtual games, from quizzes to bingo. Adding in some much loved games to your celebrations could mean your party ends up going on all night long.
