Vogue Covers We Love For Anna Wintour’s Birthday

by Steve Cook, Senior Brand Content Manager

In honour of Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna WIntour’s 70th birthday this week, we’ve picked 14 of our favourite Vogue covers from Anna’s reign, starting with her first controversial cover in 1988.

1. Anna Wintour’s first cover, November 1988

Anna Wintour’s reign as Editor-in-Chief of US Vogue began with this cover in November 1988. The furore surrounding this cover stemmed from the fact that the model, Michaela Bercu, was wearing jeans in the cover image - a first for Vogue - and was showing her stomach. The printers of the magazine were so shocked by the cover that they returned it from print, thinking it had been sent to them by mistake.

2. Naomi Campbell, September 1989

This image of Naomi Campbell from September 1989 was Naomi’s first US Vogue cover. Anna Wintour has since admitted that execs at the magazine were ‘stunned’ that she would put a black model on the cover of the September issue of Vogue (the magazine’s biggest selling issue of the year).

3. Supermodels, April 1992

This iconic cover for US Vogue’s 100th birthday issue in 1992, featuring 10 supermodels including Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Linda Evangelista, was the first of the magazine’s now infamous supermodel group covers. It remains the best-selling issue of the magazine to date.

4. Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere, November 1992

Only nine men have ever appeared on the cover of Vogue, and Richard Gere became the first when he and wife Cindy Crawford (at the time one of the most talked about couples in the world) made it to this cover.

5. Spice Girls, January 1998

At the peak of their fame, the Spice Girls debuted on the cover of US Vogue in January 1998. This cover became the first of Victoria Beckham’s many global Vogue covers.

6. Sienna Miller, September 2007

In 2009, the documentary film The September Issue, revealed what it’s really like behind the scenes at US Vogue during the planning of the magazine’s all-important September issue. This cover, featuring Sienna Miller, was the issue made famous by that film.

7. Rihanna, April 2011

Rihanna’s Vogue debut, in April 2011, was one of the most anticipated issues in the magazine’s history. Shot by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz, the image was one of the first official shoots featuring Rihanna’s red hair, which was later officially dubbed ‘Rihanna Red’.

8. Adele, March 2012

Adele made her US Vogue cover debut in March 2012, hot on the heels of her record-breaking album, 25, sweeping the board at the Grammy awards.

9. Lady Gaga on Vogue’s 120th birthday cover, 2012

Lady Gaga’s second time on the cover of US Vogue coincided with the magazine’s 120th birthday. This issue is the heaviest ever issue of the magazine, weighing in at 4.5 pounds.

10. Kim & Kanye, April 2014

It was April 2014 when Anna Wintour made the controversial decision to give a Kim Kardashian her first ever Vogue cover. Despite the negativity surrounding this cover (insiders claimed she had compromised the publication’s reputation as a ‘fashion magazine’), Wintour stands by her decision today, saying that the magazine needed to give the couple a cover to ensure Vogue was ‘leading, not following’

11. Kendall Jenner, September 2016

Kendall Jenner’s debut American Vogue cover hit the news stands in 2016, when the model fronted, not only her first US Vogue cover, but her first September issue.

12. Beyonce, September 2018

Beyonce nabbed her first Vogue cover in 2009, but this image, from the September 2018 issue when Beyonce was handed complete editorial control of the magazine, ranks as our favourite. It was shot by Tyler Mitchell, the first black photographer to shoot the cover of Vogue in the magazine’s 126-year history.

13. Justin & Hailey Bieber, March 2019

Justin Bieber became the ninth man to appear on US Vogue’s cover in March 2019, when he and wife Hailey fronted the magazine to celebrate their whirlwind marriage.

14. Zendaya, June 2019

While Zendaya’s first Vogue cover in 2017 was about her kissing goodbye to her Disney roots, her second, in June 2019, firmly closed the lid on that chapter of her life as it was all about her role in the gritty drama, Euphoria.
