The Shorts Trends You Need To Be Wearing This Year

by Chloe Wilshere, Content Creator

2020 is the year of the short. And honestly, we couldn’t be happier about it. The perfect alternative to a mini dress, shorts are going to be our favourite way to bare our legs this summer, even if we are only going as far as our closest outdoor space right now.

Most of us own a pair of shorts that have been an essential piece in our summer wardrobe every year, whether that's a pair of denim cut offs for festivals or a more tailored pair for summer nights. For this year, according to our favourite catwalks, street style stars and influencers, our essential shorts are going to become a fashion must-have.

So as we ditch our beloved skirts for shorts, we’ve rounded up the 5 short trends you need to know about now.

1. Denim Shorts

Denim shorts are as much of an essential to your wardrobe as a plain white t-shirt - and it’s likely that you own more than one pair of similar looking pairs. So although they are nothing new to the fashion scene, this wardrobe classic has seen an increase in popularity thanks to off-duty model looks from the likes of Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber and the Hadids. Oh and we’ve all been searching for the perfect pair of denim shorts ever since Beyonce’s Coachella performance back in 2018, haven’t we?

This year we’ll be pulling our denim shorts out of the wardrobe more than usuall, with more time spent at home and sunny days ahead, denim shorts are perfect for lounging around in the garden and heading to the shops. We’ll take styling advice from Kendall Jenner by wearing our denim shorts with a racerback vest, oversize jacket, sandals and 90s-style sunnies.

2. Bermuda Shorts

Bermuda Shorts originate from exactly where you’d guess they’re from… yep Bermuda (a pair of shorts that originate from a hot tropical country are definitely something we need to be wearing right?).

Bermuda shorts are typically longer in length, reach just above the knee and originally come in a range of summer colours and prints.

This year the Bermuda short takes on a more tailored and polished look in tailored silhouettes. Their slim leg is super on trend and they are perfect for smarter events like work or even weddings when life gets back to normal. Their lightweight fabric also makes them comfortable on warm days.

Although Bermuda shorts may appear scary to wear at first, we promise they’re not as scary as they seem on first sight. For an on-trend look simply pair with a racerback vest, kimono and strappy heels like Caroline Daur, or for a more relaxed look, the Bermuda short also looks great styled simply with a t-shirt and trainers.

3. Cycling Shorts

Cycling shorts have been a hot topic for several years now. We think it’s right to say that the Kardashians reinvented the cycling shorts and put them back on the map, and lets be honest, we all thought they was a bit of fad and would never see ourselves wearing them. But cycling shorts are only gaining more traction – party because we’re all stuck at home wearing the comfiest clothes we own and the cycling short has never felt more relevant. So if you’re not yet wearing cycling shorts… what are you waiting for?

They’re the most relevant item of clothing you can own in your wardrobe at the moment. Perfect for lounging around the house and styling with oversize t-shirts and trainers, but also super easy to jazz up by throwing a blazer over the top and wearing with some heels.

4. Suit Shorts

If there’s one major trend you need to be adopting this year, it is definitely the shorts suit. Julia Roberts may have said that she doesn’t think Pretty Woman is a film that couldn’t have been made today, but there’s still many iconic fashion moments in the film that continue to make resurgences in the current day - including the iconic tan shorts suit.

Co-ordinating short sets have been seen all over the place, from runways to the red carpet, and we absolutely love this new piece of tailoring. The best part about the short suit is not only will it be perfect for wearing when we’re allowed out of our houses, but that there is literally a style to suit everyone.

From styling a shorts suit casually like Bella Hadid with a t-shirt and trainers, to taking a more tailored approach by opting for bright colours and wearing a bralet underneath. There is literally a shorts suit out there for everyone and every occasion.

5. Paperbag Shorts

Paperbag shorts are a style we currently love. Not only do they come in lightweight, linen fabrics to provide optimum comfort for our current living arrangements, but once we’re allowed back out into the big wide world they’re super flattering and easy to dress up.

If you’re unsure what’s meant by the term ‘paperbag’ it’s simply a a tie-belt waist detail that cinches in the waist in to create an hourglass figure.

We first got a glimpse of the modern paperbag short in 2018 when Kendall Jenner wore a chic pair of camel coloured paperbag shorts with satin lace cami top on the Alberta Ferretti spring/summer 2019 catwalk, a look that we’ve been recreating every summer since.

For styling the paperbag shorts this year, we’re taking inspiration from Kaia Gerber and street style stars. Leather paperbag shorts remain key, even in the summer months, and look great styled with oversized, floaty blouses for a bohemian style. And if we’re lucky enough to head abroad this year, wear them styled up with a strappy heeled sandal like Kaia Gerber for the perfect holiday evening outfit.
