The Grown Up Way To Wear A Mini Dress

by Chloe Wilshere, Content Creator

When it comes to dress trends this season, there are two lengths ruling the roost and they’re at opposite ends of the spectrum.

On one side, we’ve got midi dresses in bold colours, new season textures and fun new prints and on the other side… there’s mini dresses.

For us there’s nothing we love more than a mini dress, they’re by far the easiest throw on and go outfit for the spring/summer months. But there is a misconception that mini dresses make you feel young and that they should just be reserved for the younger generation. We’re here to prove that this isn’t true. If you avoid the mini dress because you’re unsure of how to wear it, then we’re here to prove to you that a mini dress can look grown up… as shown by these 9 celebrities.

1. A Mini Shirt Dress

The shirtdress is an easily overlooked piece in our everyday wardrobe. And it’s often forgotten that the majority of shirtdress options do come in a mini dress form. So one guaranteed way to wear a mini dress and still look grown up is by taking on the mini shirtdress.

Kate Bosworth shows us just how sophisticated and age-appropriate the shirtdress can look. By simply pairing it with a kitten heel and cross-body bag, it’s an easy ‘throw-on-and-go’ outfit that would look great worn in the office.

2. A Ruffled Mini Dress

Ruffled details instantly make anything look more grown up. And there’s nothing we love more than a ruffled detail on a mini dress. They add a bohemian and feminine edge and look great styled up with western boots just like Romme Strijd or with chunky boots for festival season. And good news for you that ruffled, bohemian details are in this year. So this is one guaranteed way to wear a mini dress in a grown up way and be super on trend too.

3. A Tailored Mini Dress

As blazers become key pieces in our wardrobes, the blazer dress trend has also become a thing. The blazer mini dress is the perfect grown up occasion dress this year. The blazer dress is key for cinching in your waist thanks to its tailored details and looks great with a high heel, just as Halle Berry demonstrates. You can also make the blazer dress work for summer days by wearing it with a chunky flatform sandal or boots.

4. With Knee High Boots

If the reason you’re scared to wear a mini dress is that you'd prefer to not show off your legs, then let Kate Moss show you that it’s still possible to wear a mini dress with less leg on show - simply by wearing it with a knee-high boot.

Kate exudes her rock chick style by wearing all black, adding a fringe detail biker jacket and finishing off her mini dress with knee-high boots.

5. A Sophisticated Skater Dress

Although skater dress styles can typically be associated with teens and prom dresses, they can look super sophisticated when you get the right fit.

Poppy Delevingne shows us just that. By going for a super tight fitting skater dress, the dress moulds around the body and its skater shape allows the hem of the dress to kick out elegantly. The skater dress looks great with a heeled sandal and can be the perfect occasion dress. You could also go one better than knee-high boots by opting for a thigh-high pair like Poppy instead.

6. Throw A Kimono Over The Top

If wearing a mini dress makes you feel a little bare and like you need to throw some more clothes on, then try throwing a long maxi kimono over the top like Khloe Kardashian. This works as the perfect way to give yourself an extra bit of security and comfort.

7. Go For A Bold Colourful Print

You should never be afraid of bold colours or prints – they’re the perfect way to add a bit of fun to your wardrobe and make something like the mini dress look and feel more grown up.

Taylor Swift wears the mini dress in a sunshine yellow floral print and simply pairs it with a pair of wedges. It’s an easy-to-wear summer outfit which requires minimal styling as Swift shows us.

8. Layer With A Blazer

There’s something about wearing a blazer that instantly makes you feel more powerful and grown up. So by throwing a blazer over a mini dress like Irina Shayk your mini dress instantly becomes more grown up.

Whether you pair it with biker boots like Irina or go for a court heel, you can’t go wrong with adding a blazer over your mini dress.

9. Opt For Square Neck Details

When it comes to necklines, there used to generally be only two options, a round neck or a v-neck. But over the past few years different shaped necklines have been taking over the runways and Instagram and the square neck has become the new normal. The square neck trend dates back to the Victorian era and we can’t get enough of it… and neither can Nina Agdal. The square neck makes a mini dress look sophisticated and grown up and, as Nina shows us, looks great dressed up with heels or flat sandals in the summer months
